In the last few years the Friends have assisted the Library to secure a wide variety of items. Amongst other things, we have contributed towards the cost of letters by Whistler to his model Louise Kinsella, Goethe’s Works on CD-ROM and to electronic equipment for the Maps department of the Library. We have shared the cost of books on Chinese art, the papers of R. D. Laing, the Bibliographical Archive of the Soviet Union and Bruno Scarfe’s remarkable collection of Spanish plays, comedias sueltas and desglosadas dating from 1600 to 1900.

fgul_acquisitionsUnusual for us were our grants towards the publication of a new book The Foulis Press And The Foulis Academy about the Foulis brothers who ran an art school in the old college premises and who were appointed the University’s printers in 1742. Also out of our usual practice was a grant towards the cost of the display case on the landing outside Special Collections on Level 12. We did so want to see more of the Library’s treasures on display!

More recently we have contributed to the purchase of Kelvin papers relating to the brothers William and Kelvin letterJames Thomson, John Cairney’s Burns archive, notebooks on alchemy and mezzo print plates after Jan van Rymsdyck and Thomas Burgess. We have engaged too with modern technology with contributions towards the cost of digitising larger carpet designs in the Stoddard-Templeton Design Archive, a New Lanark Visitors’ Book dating from1795 and the Gilbert Scott plans for the University in preparation for the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2011. Thanks to continuing donations we are major funders of “Ingenious Impressions – The Coming of the Book”, the special international exhibition in the Hunterian Art Gallery, 2015.”

Under the terms of the McKenna bequest we continue to make some funding available for Library staff development.

Applications for assistance in making scholarly purchases for the Library may be made to the Friends through the Library’s representative on the Friends Committee: Lesley Richmond, Library Deputy Director and University Archivist.
